With Vuna, we were able to rebuild the wastewater treatment system during the hut's renovation three years ago. The combination of worm and plant filters with biochar as a substrate was the first of its kind for a mountain hut. This saved us a good 60 helicopter flights during construction, as we didn't have to fly heavy construction materials up.
The system operates using worms, plants, bacteria, and gravity, eliminating the need for a complex power supply. This fits in well with the hut's sustainability concept.
But we've also learned a lot with the system. For example, we had to subsequently add a layer of fine carbon to the plant filter to better distribute and filter the water. Now we're at a treatment capacity of over 95% (in comparison: an average wastewater treatment plant in the valley treats according to Water Protection Ordinance 80-85%).
